Combat

Introduction

There are seven components that determine your Combat level. They are the following:
1. Attack
2. Strength
3. Defense
4. Prayer
5. Range
6. Magic
7. Hitpoints
Combat is the biggest and most extensive "skill" in Runescape. The highest level you can achieve is 126. This requires patience and is very time consuming. Achieving higher levels will enable you to fight tougher monsters, which drop better items. Without Combat, Runescape just wouldn't be as much fun.

Melee

Shown, are four options that you have when up wield a melee weapon. If you select chop (as shown) for every one hit point you take away from an enemy, you will receive 4 experience toward the Attack skill.  If you select the Slash option (top right), you will receive the same thing, except toward the Strength skill. Lunge (bottom left) will allow you to split the experience between Attack, Strength, Defense, and Hitpoints equally. Block (bottom right) is the fourth and final option for melee. It allows for defensive experience while attacking. Blocking follows the same pattern with 4 xp per damage dealt. If you notice there is another option, Auto Retaliate. If it is on and someone attacks you, you will attack them back. If it isn't on, and someone attacks you, you will just stand there and do nothing.  Attack determines how accurate you will be while attacking an enemy. The lower your Attack level is, the more likely you will hit 0. Strength will determine how much damage you can do with one hit. The higher your Strength level is, the more hit points you will be able to take away from your enemy in one try. Defense reduces the chance you will be hit by an enemy. The Hitpoints stat will get one experience for each damage you do. Hitpoints determine how much damage you can take before dying.

Magic

Magic is a little more complicated than Melee, but the basic stuff is the same. Bash deals with attack experience and is the same as Chop in Melee. Pound deals with strength xp and is the same thing as Slash. Focus is a defensive style of fighting sort of like Block. Of course, you are now wondering where Lunge, the combination of xp fits in. This has to do with spells and retaliation with a spell and blocking. The selection in the top with a shield and spell book attacks with a spell and gives you magic and defensive xp. The spell book in the bottom right attacks with a spell, but only gives magic xp. For more information on Magic, please see the Magic Guide.

Range

Range is the most basic of the three main components of Combat. It only contains three options and all three of them give range xp. Accurate is more likely to hit your opponent, but takes longer time to reload. When I say reload, I mean how long it takes to put an arrow in the quiver, shoot, then do it again. Rapid reloads pretty quickly, but it isn't as accurate. Longrange takes the most time to reload, but also gives defensive xp. For more information on Range, please visit the Range Guide

Combat Leveling

Levels 3 - 15

Cows
Cows are one of the best ways to make money when starting your Runescape adventure. You can fight cows next to Al-Kharid, in Lumbridge. You can sell cowhides in the Al-Kharid Bank for 100gp each. Another place to find cows is in the Crafting Guild, south-west of Falador.

Chickens
Chickens are found right next to the cows. They are easy to fight because they only have 3HP and cannot hurt you. You can sell the feathers to the people at the coup for 5gp each, or sell them on the forums (in big amounts) for 10gp each.
Levels 16 - 35

Goblins
Goblins can be found at Goblin Village which is north of Falador, next to the Mind Altar. They are great to train on until you get to level 20 or 25.

Dwarves
Dwarves can be found in the Dwarven Mines, which is west of Barbarian Village. They are good to train on until you can take it up to the next level.
Levels 36 - 50

Varrock Sewers
This is the best place to train when you are at these levels. There are ghosts, skeletons, and zombies down there. This could be one of the best places to train until you get to level 60 combat.

Scorpions
Scorpions can be found in the Dwarven Mines and the Al-Kharid Mines. They don't give any good drops and you have to be ready for the occasional level 32 Scorpion!

Al-Kharid Warriors
They can be found in Al-Kharid Castle. This is a good training spot because it is right next to the bank in case you run out of food.
Levels 51 - 60

Dragon Slayer
These are the right levels to start the Dragon Slayer Quest. You might be scared at first, but make sure you have plenty of food and you'll be fine. Once you finish the Quest, your combat should raise a couple levels at once!

Ice Caves
Once you beat Dragon Slayer, it's time to head off to the Ice Caves, which are south of Rimmington. In here you can find Ice Warriors, Pirates, and Hobogoblins.
Levels 61 and over

Karmaja Island
This is a great place to head now. You can take a boat from Rimmington or Ardougne to get there. Skeletons, Deadly Red Spiders, and Lesser Demons are found here. If you don't geel comfortable fighting Lessers right away, start with Skeletons and work your way up. Who knows, maybe you'll snag a Rune Medium Helmet from the Lessers!
Green Dragons (Members Only)
Green Dragons are a great way to gain both XP and money. You can fight them and collect their hides and bones. They can be found in level 15 Wilderness, but beware of Pker's.
