I. Basic Information

A. Introduction

On the RS knowledge base, Firemaking is described as "one of the most fundamental skills". This is not true. It's main use is cooking food, which can be done on a range. In fact, a range gives you more of a chance to cook food than fires. So, Firemaking is not a very useful skill, it can't even make you money on free servers and can barely make enough to cover the costs of logs on member servers. I think the real reason people train Firemaking is just to get skill total up or to get the skill cape (the coolest cape IMO).

Even if it isn't very useful, it is a skill and therefore requires training to raise it. The most popular way to train Firemaking is to find an empty area near a bank and make a ton of fires using the most common logs such as, willow, maple and yew logs. In order to light a fire, you must have a tinder box and any type of logs. Next, you left click on the tinder box and then left click on the logs. Now, your character should be on his/her knees with a tinder box in hand trying to light a fire. When you're done, your character will get up and move away from the fire. Repeat this until you run out of logs, then go to the bank to get more. The method of training might sound boring, but it goes very fast. This is why Firemaking is one of the most popular 99 skills to get (or at least attempt) along with cooking and fletching.

I said before that Firemaking's main use is to cook food. This is true, but it also has other uses. At certain levels, you can light objects such as candles, lanterns and mining hats. These serve very useful in entering dark places (like slayer caves/dungeons). Another skill that Firemaking plays a part in is Hunter. Using a lit torch on your traps can get rid of the scent of your character so that the animals will be easier to catch.

One thing that is unique about Firemaking is that it is often used at parties. This is better known as a fire fest. People get a few friends and light up entire cities with fire. It's especially interesting when they use colored fire lighters found in certain clue scrolls.

So now that you know all about Firemaking, are you ready to start training? If so, you might find the rest of the guide useful, as it explains level requirements, experience gains, different methods of training... etc.

B. Basic Firemaking

The most popular way to train the Firemaking skill is by burning logs. In order to do this, you must use a tinder box (available at any general store) on any type of logs. Or, you can drop the logs and then choose the option "Light".

Good places to burn logs are near banks with extra space outside in front of them. This is because you move each time you light a fire, and you're not able to light fires on top of another fire or other objects. Some good places are, Falador and Edgeville (f2p) or Seers Village and Port Phasmatys.

C. Pyre Firemaking

To use pyre logs and funeral pyres, you must complete a quest called Shades of Mort'ton. During the quest you find out how to make sacred oil and pyre logs and then how to use them on the funeral pyre. In order to get sacred oil, you need to have olive oil (available from Razmire Keelgan). Next, you must light a fire in the middle of the repaired temple and then use the olive oil on it. Once this is done, you may use the sacred oil on any type of logs. This will give you pyre logs. Finally you, use the logs and shade remains (obtained by killing shades) on a funeral pyre, then light it. After you light the funeral pyre, you will get a key which opens a chest (depending on the color and type of the key) in the tomb located north-west of Mort'ton.

The keys range from bronze to silver and each type accesses different loot.

II. Extra Features

A. Pyre Firemaking

Colored fires are made by using fire lighters on logs. The lighters act as tinderboxes and are stackable. You receive them from any level clue scrolls (the higher the clue scroll, the more lighters you receive). They will always succeed in lighting the fire and they come in red, green and blue. This is what they look like:

Iron spits are used on a fire and enable you to cook rabbits, chompy birds, and jubbly birds. Iron spits are made from iron bars and require 20 Firemaking to use. They are also used in the ogre part of the Recipe for Disaster quest.

B. Firemaking Skill Cape

The Firemaking Achievement Cape requires 99 Firemaking and is obtained from Ignatius Vulcan who can be found in the forest south of Seers' Village. The cape adds 9 to all defense stats and if it is trimmed, (must have 2 or more skills at level 99) then it also adds 4 to prayer. Another thing that applies to all skill cape, is the ability to boost that certain skill 1 point. For example, if you have a Firemaking Skill Cape, it will boost your Firemaking level from 99 to 100.

D. Tips and Tricks

  • It is easy to burn a lot of logs in a row if you can find a spot with no obstacles.
  • An easy way to get cheap logs to burn is to, buy them from the general store in major cities for under half of the price from other players.
  • Higher level logs aren't necessarily better, since magic logs cost over 20 times more than willows, yet they don't give 20 times the experience.
E. Questions and Answers

Do higher level logs burn for longer than lower level logs ?
No the type of log does not matter. The duration of the fire is completely random.

Is it easier to cook food on a fire made from higher level logs than it is to cook food on a fire made from lower level logs?
Again, no. The chance of cooking food is the same for all fires.

Do lanterns or candles give experience when they are lit?
No, they do not give experience because they can be lit and extinguished continuously.
